Download Main Attrakionz's 808s & Dark Grapes II

The always generous Main Attrakionz just dropped another free album, 808s & Dark Grapes II, on fashionista Мишка's bandcamp. Like every great sequel, Dark Grapes II is bigger and bolder, and expands on what made its predecessor so compelling. Squadda B and MondreM.A.N.'s skills on the mic are sharper than ever and the upgrade to hi-fi clarifies their blunted aesthetic without sacrificing its character. The Bay Area boys have also enlisted the help of some killer producers from all over the underground, including Marlee B, Keyboard Kid, and AZ favorite, Clams Casino. --Matt Sullivan, Altered Zones

Main Attrakionz: "Diamond of God"

The Main Attrakionz crew will continue their release streak with 808s & Dark Grapes II, presented by Мишка (you know, that clothes-smith with the eyeball). A couple weeks back, we were treated to a stream of the album's first single, "Vegetables," premiered by The Fader. The Noa Boa produced cut makes use of some goofy samples of a woman saying "vegetables," "broccoli," and "lettuce" on the hook while Squadda B and Mondre go in about avocados, cabbages, and sandwich bags, which are presumably stuffed with dark green weed buds. Мишка has now allowed us to premiere "Diamond of God," the second single from the new mixtape, produced by Squadda himself. Here we find the duo nestled into their signature patience flow, taking their time while preaching peace and positive living. --Ian Paul Roger Nelson, Friendship Bracelet

Main Attrakionz: "The Neighborhood"

It doesn’t matter how many zip codes you tag the Bay Area with, it’s all one big, blessed, beautiful neighborhood. So, when talking about The Neighborhood, Yours Truly had to meet up with the Town’s most promising hip-hop duo, Main Attrakionz. Take lessons on acknowledging your roots and staying true to yourself as MondreM.A.N. and Squadda Bambino ride through the streets of Oakland. --Yours Truly

Squadda B ft. Robbie Rob: "2012"

The first time I mentioned Squadda B was when I had heard that Oakland's Main Attrakionz got caught up in some Mondre joints on their 808s & Dark Grapes mixtape. I must say that I was immediately taken by the title of Squadda B's new I Smoke Because I Don't Care About Death mix; it felt like a weird blend of harsh truth, hesitant pride, and slight humor.

Inside, we find verses about life, struggle, swag-- rapped mostly in an inspirational manner, with the occassional party sequence thrown in. But throughout there is a darkness hovering overhead, a perennial pressure to outdo one's self: to go big and make a name for yourself, 'cos otherwise you're just going to live in mediocrity until you die lonely and broke and a nobody. So why not smoke weed and sip codeine and write rhymes about how fucked-up life is, beefing the whole up with huge, Hot Boys-style beats and chopped wisps of female vocals?

My favorite couple of tracks on the mixtape squeeze multiple motifs into a single song. "2012" starts off cold and metallic-- much Main Attrakionz' "Legion of Doom," which Delorean posted in their Altered Zones guest post last August-- then warps into a cooled-out, summer anthem. Guest Post: Delorean

Ekhi Lopetegi of Delorean says:
This was originally posted by our friend K**O on Desparrame. It caught my attention right away because of the pitched-up sample base and the quiet mood of the song. Main Attrakionz are Squadda B and Mondre, and they come from the Bay Area. Like Lil B, they sound lo-fi and based, but I'd say they're more special than that. This won't make you dance, but it'll probably feel good after a party session. I am just sad that my English isn't quite good enough to get their lyrics. Oh, they've got a mixtape called 808s and Dark Grapes that you should hunt for, too!
