Altered Zones

Pechenga is the moniker Rune Lindbæk and Cato Farstad took on in the winter of 2007, when they returned to their birthplace of Vardø, Norway to record what would become Helt Borte. “Gitaro” comes to us as a taste of the purported subzero weather inspired sounds the album holds. A small grouping of accessible guitars (see: track title) and lightly played synths cautiously fills out the midrange, before drawing in a goosbumps-inducing bass to create a delicate mix of elements that manages to feel anything but. Will this be your gateway drug to ambient music? Regardless, it’s certainly another healthy mutation of that genre. --Luke Carrell, International Tapes
